MRS. HELEN A. SAMPSON

                                     CHARLOTTE 

Mrs. Helen A. Sampson, 94, of Charlotte, formerly of Pembroke, NC, died on November 27 at The Golden Living Center-Dartmouth. She was the widow of the late Benny R. Sampson.

   Mrs. Sampson is survived by two children: Sylvia Sampson Miller and husband, Bobby, of Waxhaw, NC, and Selwyn B. Sampson and wife, Deirdre, of St. Paul, OR. Also surviving are five grandchildren: Tracy Miller Lewkowiez of Evans, GA, Todd Miller of Charlotte and Kelsey, McKenzie and Justin Sampson of St. Paul, OR; as well as three great grandchildren: Brooke Miller of Charlotte and Aaron and Nicole Lewkowiez of Evans.  Mrs. Sampson also is survived by her brothers Fred Locklear of Pembroke and Gaston Locklear of Blythewood, SC.

   Mrs. Sampson spent most of her life in Pembroke, graduating from then-Pembroke State College. She was the first Robeson County Agricultural Extension Service Agent assigned to work with the area’s Lumbee Indian residents The ladies Homemaker and youth 4-H clubs she organized and guided received state and national recognition, and she was instrumental in introducing many young people to advanced educational opportunities and assisting them in obtaining scholarships and stipends. Mrs. Sampson retired in 1977 after 25 years service.

   After Mrs. Sampson’s retirement, she and her husband, who taught school for 42 years, served their community as travel planners, leading groups to places such as Hawaii, the Bahamas, Disney World, Savannah and St. Augustine. On their 50th anniversary, the Sampsons were treated to an Alaskan cruise by their children.

   Mrs. Sampson loved yard landscaping and was known for her beautiful yard and helped many friends plan theirs.  She had her own greenhouse and rooting beds and enjoyed sharing her azaleas, and rhododendrons with others.

    Mrs. Sampson moved to Charlotte in 2004 to be closer to her daughter.

    A funeral service for Mrs. Sampson will be held at 2:30 PM on Sunday, December 11 at Berea Baptist Church in Pembroke, with pastor the Reverend Chris Hunt presiding.  Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to the church at P. O. Box 1206, Pembroke, NC 28372.
