Mr. Francis Pinchbeck, 61, of 116 Casey Road, died June 29, 2008 at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill, NC, surrounded by his pastor, Rev. & Mrs. Chris Hunt, his sisters and his brother. He was born September 27, 1947 in Pembroke to the late Walter Pinchbeck and Mrs. Bertha Pinchbeck. Francis graduated from Pembroke High School and served in the US Air Force from April 25, 1977 until November 1988. Francis was a member of Berea Baptist Church and Mr. Barto Clark’s Sunday School Class.
Francis was a lifetime Scouter, receiving the coveted Silver Beaver in 2000. He was involved in scouting for 39 years. He received his Eagle Award in 1965, the Cape Fear Award for the Central District in 1995 and completed his Woodbadge Training in 1995. A life-time member of the Klahican Lodge #331 of the O.A., Pinchbeck attended the BSA National Volunteer Leader Training in Philmont, NM in 1996. While serving in the USAF he was a Scout Leader for troops in Fontana, CA and RAF Mildenhall, England. He has served as a Scoutmaster/Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 27, in Pembroke since 1988. For several years Pinchbeck has served on the Central District Round-Up Team and has served as Camporee Chief for the Central District. Since 1994, he has served as a provisional scoutmaster for Camp Bowers.
Francis was diagnosed with emphysema in the late nineties. He was placed on the lung transplant list in 2004. He prayfully waited for his lungs for four years. On Tuesday, May 20, 2008, he was successfully transplanted with 2 lungs. For five weeks Francis was given a new lease on life and enjoyed it to its fullest. Daily he thanked God for this miracle in his life. He spoke gratefully of his family and friends who had helped make this miracle possible.
The funeral will be conducted 4:00 p.m. Thursday, July 3, 2008, at Berea Baptist Church with the Rev. Chris Hunt officiating. Burial will follow in the Berea Church Cemetery.
Surviving are his mother: Bertha Pinchbeck; three sisters: Mary P. Teets & husband: Ed of Pembroke, Sandra P. Bond & husband: Rich of Titusville, FL and Helena P. Williams & husband: Ron of Beaufort, SC; a brother: Walter Pinchbeck, Jr. & wife: Sylvia of Louisville, KY. The family gratefully acknowledges his mother’s caregivers: Vickie Bryant, Lollie Lee and Candance Hunt.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, July 2, 2008, from 7-9 p.m. at Locklear & Son Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Troop 27, Pembroke or to Berea Baptist Church.
