Mrs. Gertrude Oxendine, 74, of Wesley Pines Nursing Home, finished this life’s journey on Saturday, June 13, 2009. She was born on October 23, 1932 and was a native and lifelong resident of Robeson County and was the daughter of the late Mr. Earnest & Mrs. Roberta Oxendine. She is also preceded in death by two sons: Mr. Earnest J. Locklear and Mr. Lanny Steven Locklear; four brothers: Mr. Marley Oxendine, Mr. John Oxendine, Mr. Luke Oxendine and Mr. James Earnest Oxendine all of Pembroke; four sisters: Mrs. Ila Mae Locklear, Mrs. Lenora Locklear, Mrs. Ethel Blue all of Pembroke and Mrs. Mattie Franklin and a grandson: Bryan Locklear of San Antonio, Texas.
“Miss Gertie” as she was lovingly referred to, was an educator with a passion, compassion, and love for all children. She was blessed with the gifts of kindness and hospitality and will be remembered for her love of interior and cake decorating.
The funeral will be conducted Wednesday, June 17, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at Locklear & Son Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs: Bill James Locklear, Herman Oxendine and Burial will follow in the Oxendine Cemetery.
Surviving are a daughter: Darlene Jacobs of Lake Junaluska, NC; two sons: Rudy Locklear of Pembroke and Jeffery Locklear of Lexington; one sister Mrs. Evie Lee McFarland of Mission Viejo, CA, two brothers: Mr.
Purdie Ray Oxendine and Remer “Barney” Oxendine both of Pembroke, eight grandchildren: Drake Jacobs of Columbia, SC, Jamie Locklear, Christopher Locklear, Tressa Locklear, Brandon Locklear, Tony Locklear, Keith Harris all of Pembroke and Keven Harris of Rocky Mount and 10 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, from 7-9 p.m. at Locklear & Son Funeral Home.
