Mr. Fred Locklear, 86, of 2256 NC Hwy 710, was born August 16, 1923 and departed this life Wednesday, November 25, 2009 at Southeastern Regional Medical Center. He was preceded in death by his parents Mr. Junie and Mrs. Catherine Locklear; three brothers: Mr. Roscoe, Mr. Esly, and Mr. Eddie; five sisters: Mrs. Edna Locklear, Mrs. Sarah Jane Dial, Mrs. Carrie Jones, Mrs. Nancy Jones, and Mrs. Sophronia Jones.
Mr. Locklear served in the United States Army during World War II in Company I of 367th Infantry. He attended Pembroke State College where he played on the college’s first football team and was an avid supporter and contributor of University of North Carolina at Pembroke Football. He married Katie Jacobs on January 12, 1952. Together they raised one daughter, Mrs. Wanda Locklear. He retired from the United States Postal Service in 1980. Mr. Locklear was a dedicated member of Friendship Missionary Baptist church, Veteran’s of Foreign War, and Disabled American Veterans.
The funeral will be conducted 3:00 p.m., Sunday, November 29, 2009, at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church with the Revs: Chris Webb and Coolidge Cummings officiating. Burial will follow in the Sandcutt Cemetery.
Mr. Locklear leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife of 57 years: Mrs. Katie J. Locklear; a daughter: Mrs. Wanda Kay Locklear and her children: Mr. Dexter E. Locklear, Mr. James Fredrick Tyler Locklear, and Ms. Sierra C. Locklear; a great-grandchild: Chadon all of Pembroke; Mrs. Janice Jones and children and Mr. Harold V. Locklear and one child of Pembroke; two sisters: Mrs. Ella Bullard and Mrs. Mildred Locklear; a brother: Mr. Curency Locklear and a host of relatives and friends.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Saturday, November 28, 2009, at Locklear & Son Funeral Home.
