Mr. Sam “The Candy Man” Carter, 81, of 372 Russell’s farm Road, was born January 19, 1929 and departed this life on Saturday, March 20, 2010 at Southeastern Regional Medical Center. Mr. Sam grew up in the Mt. Airy community and as a young man, he met and married Ms. Clarisa Bryant and they were blessed with a daughter: Ms. Fatima Ann. He was preceded in death by his parents: Mr. John Ander Locklear; Mrs. Elsie Mae Carter Locklear & Mr. Russell W. Locklear, Sr.; four brothers: Mr. Bill Buck Locklear, Mr. Tom N. Carter, Mr. Roosevelt Locklear and an infant brother: Master Daniel Locklear.
Mr. Carter was a lifetime member of the Locklear-Lowry VFW Post. He was an avid sports fan and volunteered faithfully. He was well known for his fishing and his “green thumb” since he provided grapevines to many friends and relatives.
Mt. Airy benefited from Sam’s benevolence of providing Bibles for graduates, donations to the new sanctuary and his gift for the new addition to the church cemetery.
The funeral will be conducted 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 24, 2010, at Mt. airy Baptist Church with the Revs: Steve Strickland and Adrian Hammonds officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Airy Church Cemetery.
Mr. Carter is survived by a daughter: Mrs. Fatima Ann Carter Jacobs of Lumberton; a sister: Mrs. Mary Jane Bryant and her husband: Mr. Alfred Bryant; two brothers: Mr. Grady Locklear and his wife: Hazel Locklear and Mr. Russell W. Locklear, Jr. and his wife: Mrs. Patsy Locklear all of Pembroke; three grandchildren: Ms. Teresa Mae Jacobs of Fairmont, Ms. Tracy Nicole Jacobs of Shannon and Mr. Larry Jacobs, Jr. of Lillington; nine grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, March 23, 2010, at Locklear & Son Funeral Home.
