Mr. Hampton C. Brayboy

                                            Pembroke

     Mr. Hampton Cooper Brayboy, 68, of 174 Stanley Street, was born May 8, 1941 to Mr. Huron G. & Mrs. Attelia Graham Brayboy and departed this life on Friday, August 28, 2009 at Duke University Medical Center.  He is preceded in death by his wife: Mrs. Pattie L. Brayboy; his parents and a sister: Ms. Mary Temple Brayboy; his father-in-law: Mr. Ashford Locklear, his mother-in-law: Mrs. Esterlene Locklear; a sister-in-law: Mrs. Carol Jean Young and two brothers-in-law: Mr. Donald Baker, Sr. and Mr. Jydor Locklear.

    Mr. Hampton graduated in 1964 from Pembroke State College and later received his Master’s Degree from Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio.  He taught school for over 40 years in Robeson County, Scotland County and Ohio.  

     Mr. Hampton was committed to educating young people and in the later years became a tutor.  In 1991 he established an endowment scholarship in honor of his late wife: Mrs. Pattie Brayboy.  The scholarship has enabled over 30 young people to further their education.  The scholarship will continue to help many more.  He was a life-long member of Sandy Plains United Methodist Church, where he served as Sunday School teacher, lay speaker, chairperson of the Board of Trustees, a member of the church council and a volunteer tutor at Hickory Grove United Methodist Church in Clio, SC.  He was a faithful servant to God, his family, his church and his community.

     The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m., Tuesday, September 1, 2009, at Sandy Plains United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mattheue Locklear and Rev. Robert Mangum officiating.  Burial will follow in the Lumbee Memorial Gardens.

     Surviving are two children: Mrs. Necia B. Chavis (Richard) and Mr. Huron G. Brayboy (Malina); two grandchildren: Miss Maya and Master Joshua Chavis; two sisters: Mrs. Patsy B. Baker and Ms. Joy B. Locklear; his fiancé: Ms. Belinda Jacobs; his step mother-in-law: Mrs. Juanita O. Locklear; brothers-in-law: Mr. Dale Young and Mr. Harry Locklear (Linda); eight nephews: Mr. Anthony Baker, Sr. and Mr. Donald Baker, Jr., Mr. Darryl Locklear, Mr. Kenneth Locklear, Mr. Kelvin Locklear, Mr. Bryan Locklear, Mr. Shawn Locklear and Mr. Mark Young; six nieces: Ms. Pam Baker, Ms. Lisa Baker, Ms. Cindy Oswalt, Ms. Karen Rhodes, Ms. Sharon Locklear and Ms. Nicole Locklear; several great-nieces and nephews and a host of relatives and friends.

     The family will receive friends Monday, August 31, 2009, from 7-9 p.m. at Locklear & Son Funeral Home.
